Knitting with Alpaca Through Spring

Knitting with Alpaca Through Spring

When the weather turns and the days grow longer, it's tempting to pack away anything cosy until next autumn. But alpaca is one fibre that doesn't need to hibernate. Light, soft and wonderfully adaptable, it has a quiet knack for spring's in-between weather. Here's how to make the most of it through the warmer months.

Why alpaca isn't just for winter

Alpaca fibres are naturally temperature-regulating. They hold warmth close when the air is cool, yet breathe beautifully as the day warms up, which makes them surprisingly at home in spring's changeable conditions.

It's also remarkably light for the warmth it gives. A fine alpaca layer won't weigh you down, so it suits the season's easy, throw-on-and-go pieces.

Spring projects where alpaca shines

Think light layers rather than heavy winter warmers. A loose tee or fine cardigan, a wrap that lives over your shoulders on cool mornings, or a soft shawl for evenings outside all sit comfortably in alpaca.

A sport-weight alpaca yarn is especially handy here. It knits up into a fabric with lovely drape, so simple shapes look polished without much effort.

Stitches that keep it spring-light

Open and drapey stitch patterns are your friend in spring. Lace and openwork let the breeze through, and even plain stocking stitch takes on a softer, lighter feel with a slightly relaxed gauge.

Our rule of thumb: if a fabric feels dense and firm on the needles, go up a needle size and let the alpaca bloom. You'll get an airier fabric that drapes rather than coats.

Caring for your alpaca knits

Alpaca is gentle to wear and asks for gentle care in return. Hand wash your pieces in cool to lukewarm water, no hotter than 30°C, and press the water out rather than wringing.

Dry flat in the shade, reshaping while damp. Because alpaca can felt, avoid hot water and vigorous rubbing, and your spring layers will stay beautiful for seasons to come.

Cool mornings, warm afternoons and everything in between: with the right project and a lighter touch, alpaca can carry your knitting happily through spring.
