The In-Between Knits: What to Wear When Winter Meets Spring

When the seasons don't quite agree

Spring rarely arrives all at once. The mornings can still feel cool, while the afternoon calls for something lighter, and a heavy winter jumper is not always the right answer.

This is where in-between knits earn their place. They add just enough warmth without making you feel wrapped up for winter, and they are easy to layer, remove or carry as the day changes.

Choose light layers with plenty of drape

Look for yarns and garments that feel soft and light rather than dense and bulky. A delicate mohair and silk blend such as DROPS Kid-Silk creates a beautiful layer with warmth, softness and an airy drape.

Held on its own, it can make a fine, floaty fabric. Worked double or paired with another light yarn, it adds gentle texture and a little more comfort for cooler mornings without losing that spring feeling.

Three useful pieces for the transition

A cropped jumper works beautifully over a dress or a simple tee, while a short-sleeve top can be worn on its own once the day warms up. Both are practical choices when you want the shape and texture of a handknit without the weight of a full winter layer.

A soft wrap is another useful piece to keep close. It can sit around your shoulders in the morning, fold into a bag during the afternoon and come back out again when the temperature drops.

Let the colour palette do some of the work

Soft neutrals make transitional knits easy to wear. Oat, stone, wheat, sand and creamy off white sit comfortably with denim, linen and the lighter colours that start to appear in spring wardrobes.

Keeping the palette gentle also lets the texture of the knitting take centre stage. Look for simple shapes, delicate stitch detail and yarns with a little halo or sheen, then layer them with the pieces you already reach for every day.
