Stash-Busting, Properly

Every knitter's stash starts as a good intention. A single ball bought because the colour was perfect. Three skeins left from a jumper. Something on sale that you'd definitely find a use for. Eventually the drawer stops closing.

The problem isn't the amount. It's that a stash you can't see is a stash you'll never use.

Sort by weight, not colour

Colour is how you shop, but weight is how you knit. Group everything into DK, 4ply, aran and so on, and suddenly you can see what's actually possible. Two odd balls of the same weight are a project. Two beautiful balls of different weights are a problem for another day.

Weigh partial balls while you're at it and write the grams on a tag. "About half left" is the single most common reason a stash project runs out three rows from the end.

Match the project to the amount

Under 50g is accessories territory: mitts, a headband, a pair of baby booties. Between 50g and 150g gets you a hat, a cowl, or a good set of colourwork contrasts. Over 150g of one yarn is a shawl, a vest, or the main body of something striped.

Be realistic about it. Trying to stretch 80g into a jumper is how yarn ends up back in the drawer for another two years.

Use a connector yarn

The trick that makes scrappy projects look intentional is repetition. Choose one soft, neutral yarn and let it appear throughout — every other stripe, all the edges, the whole border. It frames the mismatched pieces and tells the eye that this was a plan.

Light, airy blends work best here. They sit quietly beside stronger colours and won't overpower finer leftovers. DROPS Sky is a good example: soft, airy, and in shades that blend rather than compete.

Know when to let it go

Some yarn isn't worth saving. A single 20g ball of something discontinued, a fibre you didn't enjoy the first time, a colour you've gone off. Pass it to a friend, donate it to a school or a craft group, or use it as waste yarn for provisional cast-ons and stitch holders. A stash you feel guilty about is worse than an empty drawer.
